Notes Montana's gold rush resulted in the large scale immigration of men of all types, including those on the wrong side of the law. Stagecoaches bearing shipments of gold through remote, unsettled, and unpatrolled regions provided an irresistible lure for highwaymen seeking to reap the benefits of the boom without the incumbent backbreaking labor. Russell featured these road agents-or "hold ups" as he often termed them-in a number of paintings and frequently made reference to them in letters to his friends.
