Notes This is a depiction of a young Blackfeet Indian woman riding at the head of a moving camp that is following the buffalo hunt. She is resplendent with her bright trade blanket and accoutrements. She carries her infant child on her back and steers her mare and its foal across a wide river with the aid of an elk horn-handled quirt. The mare pulls the travois laden with the belongings essential to camp life. Travois were made and owned by the women of the tribe. It was the women's responsibility to transport all household items to the next camp.
