Notes Russell joined the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Great Falls Lodge #214, on March 30, 1908. In October 1917, the Cowboy Artist received a plain, printed card from the Elks Club, polling members on their intentions regarding the upcoming fall "smoker." In true Russell fashion, Charlie embellished his response with both an illustration and a humorous note acknowledging his plans to attend the informal gathering. The illustration-which shows Russell on a galloping horse, charging after two speeding cars-reiterates his disdain for the automobile, which was not only a common theme in his illustrated letters, but also a heartfelt sentiment.
