Notes Russell executed this drawing as part of a commission to illustrate 'The Blazed Trail of the Old Frontier', a "log" written by Agnes C. Laut describing the Upper Missouri Historical Expedition. Organized by the Great Northern Railway with the assistance of the state historical societies of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Montana, the six-day excursion was held in July 1925. The venture sought to bring together "a distinguished group of historians and writers from the United States and Canada," accompanied by interested members of the public, to travel the Great Northern's line, stopping for planned celebrations at selected historic sites along the way.
