Notes In this piece, a young woman shyly visits with a cowboy who has ridden up to the doorstep of her log-cabin home on the plains. He leans forward in his saddle in an attempt to engage her in conversation, while she stands somewhat circumspectly-keeping hold of her broom. The dog looks on the encounter with great interest. During the years that Russell rode the range, eligible young women were few and far between on the open plains of Montana, so an encounter like the one depicted here would have represented a memorable distraction for a young cowboy.
