Notes In a letter to MHS director Arnie Olsen, dated July 29, 2004, Stokes writes: You may be interested in knowing how I came to sculpt this piece. In April, 2003, I was shown a rare book by Edward S. Curtis titled 'Portraits from North American Indian Life,' published by Outerbridge and Lazard, Inc. 1972. / As I am an artist and have made many sculptures, I was suddenly inspired to make a sculpture of New Chief because of his strong handsome look and he wore little complicated jewelry and feathers. I started to make him immediately in plasticine. To me it was an exciting and happy experience making it.... The sculpture turned out very well so I had a bronze cast at the Laran Foundry in Chester, PA..."
