Notes In this piece, the artist portrays himself as a younger man astride one of his favorite horses, Red Bird. Russell harks back to his youthful days on the range when he worked as a night wrangler. Of those days Russell wrote, "I was neither a good roper nor a rider. I was a night wrangler. How good I was, I'll leave it for the people I worked for to say."
