Notes Russell modeled this whimsical tableau of a mother grizzly bear and two cubs confronting a porcupine in 1914. The prickly rodent appears as startled as the bears. The young cubs have never seen an animal quite like this, but the mother bear knows exactly what confronts them, and she keeps her distance. Russell heightens the tension by positioning the mother bear and cubs on one far end of the base and the porcupine on the edge of the other side.
