Notes 'OH Cowboys Roping a Steer 'depicts a scene from the Judith Basin ranch where Russell spent the harsh winter of 1886-1887. This painting was most likely completed about 1892-several years after he had left the Judith Basin-and serves as an outstanding example of Russell's early ability to capture the motion and energy of cowboys working on the open range. Here, they ride with lariats twirling in the air, ready to apprehend a runaway steer. The central rider will rope the head; the rear rider prepares to rope the hind legs.
