Notes This painting depicts two prominent leaders of the Montana fur trade, American Fur Company entrepreneurs Andrew Dawson (standing) and Pierre Chouteau, Jr. (seated) posed beside the Missouri River. In the background lies Fort Benton. The figure on the left wears a black suit, and stands. The other man is seated, wears a brown jacket, and holds a pipe in his proper right hand. There are furs, crates, a barrel, etc. piled on the wharf. A river recedes into the distance behind the two men. There are docked steamboats and buildings in the background on the right edge of the image, and mountains in the far distance.
