|Title||Cathedral Series 8/75 (after Monet)|
|Dimensions||H-48 W-32 inches|
Reproduction in red and blue from Monet's Cathedral Series showing portal and rose window; white grid of Ben-Day dots over red and blue gives stencil effect.
Lichtenstein's Cathedral series was one of two created in homage to French Impressionist Claude Monet. The other was his Haystack series, also of 1969. Like Monet, Lichtenstein depicts the façade of Rouen Cathedral. Unlike Monet, each of Lichtenstein's prints uses precisely the same image printed in different colorways. Both artists ultimately create a series of façades depicted at different times of day. Where Monet uses his ubiquitous loose Impressionistic brush strokes, Lichtenstein replaces these with his ubiquitous Ben-Day dots.
