Notes In 1866, having lost his young wife and two daughters to pneumonia, William Thomas and his eight year old son Charley left their home in Illinois to make a new home out west. Wishing to make better time William, Charley and another man named Joe Schultz pushed ahead and separated from their wagon train. All three were massacred while camped along the Bozeman Trail (near present-day Greycliff) with all but this boot, a diary, several arrows, and a ceremonial stick bundle remaining at the site.
