Artist Russell, Charles M. (1864-1926)
Dimensions H-19.5 W-14.5 inches
Medium Watercolor/Paper
Date 1901
Notes Showing here his mastery of the watercolor technique, Russell portrays a mounted warrior who sits alert and at the ready near an outcropping. He keeps an eye on the landscape below. His horse stands restlessly and is ready to "go!" but its energy is held at bay by his watchful owner. The blue sky is washed in brightly at the top and becomes lighter at the horizon. Transparent washes form distant hills and plains far below. The rocky outcropping, horse, and rider have been first lightly sketched in by the artist. Transparent watercolor is then laid down and is enhanced by touches of opaque watercolor, which provide the feeling of depth and volume. The foreground is of varying light, tan-colored washes with red and brown transparent strokes of color and a hint of opaque white to provide the illusion of grasses and rocks.
