Notes Russell made a number of friends during his stays in California. One was Harry Carey Sr., a famous Western movie star, and his family. The actor's son Harry Carey Jr. recalled a moment around the breakfast table when Russell pulled out the center of a loaf of bread and mashed it together to form a group of small animals. It seemed that the artist had an insatiable urge to work with his hands. He later gave Harry Carey Jr. a wax model of Harry Jr.'s pet goat that was later bronzed.
