Object Name Painting
Artist Russell, Charles M. (1864-1926)
Dimensions H-17.5 W-23.5 inches
Medium Oil on canvas
Date 1898
Notes One consequence of Russell's tremendous popularity is the proliferation of myths surrounding his life. Legend maintains that the subject of this portrait, Keeoma, was the daughter of an influential Blood leader. Charlie courted Keeoma while living with that tribe for an extended period of time in southern Alberta. In reality, of course, although Russell was a frequent visitor to the neighboring Indian camps, his 1888 sojourn in Canada was spent "batching" in a cabin with a fellow cowboy from Montana over a single summer.
