Artist Russell, Charles M. (1864-1926)
Dimensions H-9.25 W-11.25 inches
Medium Watercolor/Pen and Ink/Paper
Date 1925
Notes This is typical of the action-packed works by Russell, a master of the use of pen and ink with touches of watercolor. Russell created a great many works in this method. He used them to enhance his often humorous and sometimes salty letters to friends. Here the cowboy is roping a shorthorn steer on the fly. But the rope has gone around a horn as well as a rear leg of the steer, who is twisted around on itself and is about to go down as the cowboy jumps off his galloping horse to quickly tie up the steer.
