Notes 'Mountain Chief' was a great Blackfeet warrior who achieved many feats in battle during his youth and later became a statesman for his tribe. He lived a long life; he was born in 1848 and died in 1942. When he was a boy, he witnessed his father signing the Lame Bull Treaty in 1855. In 1866 he himself was among the chiefs who negotiated the treaty that ceded the country east of the Sweet Grass Hills to the government, and in 1895 he took part in the conference that resulted in the treaty by which the Blackfeet sold lands that would become the eastern part of Glacier National Park. He made trips to Washington, D.C., seeking aid for his people, and during his life he met with Presidents Roosevelt, McKinley, Wilson, and Taft.
