Notes This sketch is one of a series completed by Granville Stuart on a trip he took up the Missouri River, aboard the "W. B. Dance." He left St. Louis on April 14, 1866, and arrived at Fort Benton on June 8 of that same year. This was the last leg of a much longer trip--which began on January 6, 1866-- that took Stuart from Deer Lodge to Virginia City, then on to Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, West Liberty (Iowa), and back to Fort Benton. When he returned to Montana he published his ventures in "A Sketch of a Trip to 'America' in 1866, and Return Trip up the Missouri River, to Fort Benton, Montana," in the "Montana Post," Virginia City, January 5, 12, 19 & 26, 1867. That same text was republished as a book, titled "Granville Stuart--Diary & Sketchbook of a Journey"--by Dawson's Book Shop in 1963 (call # 917.8 / St9).
