Notes The man sits on a roan pony, wrapped in a Hudson's Bay trade blanket. He wears a single eagle feather in his hair and holds a Winchester Model 1866 carbine-.44 Henry cartridge rifle and an elk horn-handled quirt. The pony's forelock and tail are decorated with a group of eagle feathers. The elk horn-handled quirt in this painting is a familiar item, visible in many of Russell's paintings.
