Russell created the original model of 'Sign Talk' around 1900. The title was not given by the artist, a noted "sign talker" in his own right, but was assigned later on the basis of the gesture of the seated Indian figure, who sits cross-legged, leaning forward with his left elbow on his knee, and his hand held up in a loose gesture. He braids are held with discs, he wears hoop earnings, and he is robed in a blanket.
