Notes This is reportedly the last watercolor painting completed by Russell before his death in 1926. Wallis Huidekoper recounted that he first saw this painting in the hospital room while he was visiting Russell. He told his friend how much he liked the piece. When Russell protested that it wasn't quite finished, Huidekoper replied, "It looks good to me, sign and I'll buy it." That is how he acquired the marvelous painting When Cows Were Wild, which shows Russell's mastery of the gouache technique, along with his outstanding ability to simply convey the story of an action-packed event that was once common on the open range.
