Notes 'Wolf with Bone' was first modeled around 1901 and was first cast into bronze around 1927-1928. It is unclear how many original lifetime bronze casts were created, but it is estimated to be about nine total. Several original painted plaster models are known to have been made by the artist and given away as gifts to his friends. Subsequent bronze castings were made from these original plaster copies in later years. The wolf was a popular subject for Russell, who captured the untamed likeness of the wild lobo that had all but disappeared from the Montana landscape prior to its recent reintroduction to the West in the mid-1990s.
