Notes 'Smoking Up' was the first Russell sculpture to be cast in bronze. He modeled the sculpture while on his visit to New York City and sold the original model to the New York Cooperative Society. It is of a raucous cowboy riding a rearing horse, whooping and hollering and shooting his gun in the air-"smoking it up" after spending his wages in a local watering hole.
