Broder (p. 188), this painting was created for a calendar produced by the New York Life Insurance Company in 1954 in observance of the expedition's bicentennial. The illustration "depicts the explorers on the upper Missouri River. Meriwether Lewis is holding the octant, while William Clark, seated, examines the map."
